Diploma recognition in the Tri-City: where do I start?

Quick answer Nostrification confirms a foreign higher education diploma. You file the application at a university that runs the relevant field of study (the University of Gdańsk or Gdańsk University of Technology, for example), or you use the free NAWA Qualifier system.

Step by step

  1. Check in the online NAWA Qualifier system whether your diploma needs the full nostrification procedure, or is recognised automatically under international agreements.
  2. Have the diploma and the transcript of grades translated by a sworn translator (or obtain an apostille / legalisation from the issuing country).
  3. Choose a Tri-City university holding an A+, A or B+ research category in your discipline (for example UG, PG or GUMed).
  4. Submit the application to the dean's office of the relevant faculty together with the full set of documents.
  5. If you are a jobseeker registered with the Voivodeship Labour Office in Gdańsk, the nostrification fee may be covered for you.

Nostrification is the official procedure for establishing whether a foreign higher education diploma is equivalent to a Polish diploma and professional title (licencjat, inżynier or magister).

When is nostrification necessary?

  • To practise a regulated profession (doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher or psychologist, for example).
  • To continue studying at the next degree level, where a bilateral agreement requires it.
  • With many employers who need formal confirmation of higher education for specialist roles.

Where to go in the Tri-City:

  1. University of Gdańsk: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, law and economics.
  2. Gdańsk University of Technology: engineering, architecture and technical fields.
  3. Medical University of Gdańsk (GUMed): medicine, pharmacy, nursing and public health.
  4. Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk: fine arts and design.

A tip from the Mozaika team: check your diploma in the NAWA Qualifier before you file anything. Many diplomas from EU and certain partner countries do not need costly nostrification, only a certificate of equivalence. At a free career consultation we can go through this with you step by step.
