First steps
How do I get a PESEL number and a Trusted Profile in Gdańsk?
Quick answer
You can get a PESEL free of charge at one of the Resident Service Points (Zespół Obsługi Mieszkańców) of the Gdańsk City Office, for example at ul. Partyzantów 74 or ul. Nowe Ogrody 8/12. A passport or other identity document is enough. While you are there, ask them to set up a free Trusted Profile (Profil Zaufany) at the same time.

Step by step
- Bring your foreign passport or another photo identity document.
- Book a visit online at gdansk.pl, or take a ticket from the machine at the office first thing in the morning.
- Fill in the application for a PESEL number (forms are available at the office in Polish and Ukrainian).
- At the counter, tick the box asking to confirm a Trusted Profile, the clerk will verify your identity on the spot.
- You receive the PESEL number as a certificate immediately, during the same visit.
The PESEL number is an 11-digit permanent identity number used in Poland. You need it to take up legal employment, settle your taxes (PIT), use public healthcare (NFZ), open a bank account or enrol a child at school.

A tip from the Mozaika team: if you arrive before 8:00 in the morning, you have the best chance of taking a ticket from the dispenser at the office instead of waiting weeks for an online appointment.
