Music and string instruments Iran / Poland

Ramin Ahmadi

A musician and instrument maker. He plays the tar and the setar, and builds them himself. At Mozaika he runs open rehearsals you can come to without an instrument and without any skill.

About the Work & Technique

Ramin has lived in Gdańsk for nine years and spent the first three working in a kitchen without telling anyone that he played. He says music was a profession in Iran, and in Poland it was for a long time not even a topic of conversation.

He builds instruments from mulberry wood that he imports once a year. A single tar takes around eight months.

His open rehearsals at Mozaika are exactly what they look like: a few people sit in a circle and play. Some bring a violin, some a guitar, some come only to listen. Ramin maintains that Persian scales and Polish folk music have more in common than either side suspects, and he usually proves it within a quarter of an hour.
