Hanna Wiśniewska

A weaver and embroiderer from Gdańsk. She runs the Thursday needlework circle at Mozaika, where Ukrainian and Kashubian embroidery are learned side by side at one table.

About the Work & Technique

Hanna is a third-generation Gdańsk native and came to Mozaika because she was looking for people to sew with, not because she wanted to get involved in anything. She stayed three years.

She runs the Thursday circle, which began with four people and now sometimes leaves nowhere to sit. Kashubian and Ukrainian embroidery sit side by side at the table, and that is the part Hanna likes talking about most: both are colourful, both have strict rules about pattern, and for the first six months everyone kept discovering how alike they are.

Hanna does not speak Ukrainian. She says it does not get in the way of embroidery, because most of it is shown with your hands anyway.
